The woman rages, her dark hair flying. She pulls away from a light-haired child. The images of the two figures fuse, the child’s stomach doubles as the woman’s breast (fig. 10). I present this pastel drawing to begin my analysis with Lee Roloff. The art therapist in me worries that the drawing shows a terrible split. Although the drawing screams its content at the viewer, Lee responds to an area in the background, a bright red and magenta. “Try to discover what that color expresses for you,” he says. I explain to him that my reason for entering analysis is twofold. I want to work out something about the feminine for myself, but I also want to learn firsthand, more deeply, how the image process serves as a way of knowing. I want to find a way to live with myself as an art therapist.
